The Lamp Design Project
This Project is completed over a semester and explores the different tasks for each of the four stages of the Design Process. Students research ideas, explore different options to meet the need of an end-user to create a unique Lamp design.
Students need to record their research, drawing and design development in their visual diaries to maintain a record of their progress. Assessment is completed at the end of each stage of the Design Process. This project gives students the opportunity again to build on their skill development to proto-type their ideas to finalise a viable design to make in full scale.
Their final design is carefully crafted to fulfill the need of the End-user and create a unique Lamp design. The production stage is recorded in a ‘Record of Progress’ journal and the final product is evaluated for its quality and meeting the specific need of the end-user.
Side table
During ECP students are inducted into the safe use of tools and machinery within the workshop to ensure their management of safety is understood and how to wear the PPE equipment. Demonstrations are used to show students how to create a wide range of Joints such as rebate joints, boxed dovetail joint, cross halving joint, Mortise and tenon joint and a mitre joint that form the basis for different projects over the year. Students also need to learn skills in how to join pieces of wood together to improve the quality of their final product. The Side Table Project uses the student’s skills in creating a table with an individually designed tabletop. All their development through the Design Process is recorded through drawing, research and design development in their visual diary. Students utilise their joint skills to craft their frame and legs for the table and begin to understand the construction methods to assemble different products.
Laser cut Chair Designs
Students use their understanding of design development processes to explore ideas for a Laser cut chair design. They need to carefully consider the flat pack application of developing the chair design. As if the chair is sliced through and then re-glued back together. The student’s final design is drawn in Adobe Illustrator to be Laser cut into sections and glued together. Students need to understand technical drawing and the different rendering within Adobe Illustrator.
