Still life drawing
Charcoal, pencil, ink
Students were inspired by Melbourne artist Mirka Mora’s use of a black and white scheme to create large scale drawings, observed from still life. The compositions were determined by students working from all sides of the paper to remove a traditional way of viewing. Students used a variety of materials and techniques including pencil, charcoal, watercolour, ink, gouache and pen to work continuously on the same paper during the 4 weeks of ECP.
Botanical Illustrations (Covid 19)
Charcoal, pencil, ink
As students were sent into isolation and began working from home, they researched the work of well known Australian artist ex de Medici, particularly with a view to her meticulously detailed visual style and use of botanic imagery to make a political comment. Students made their own botanic imagery and incorporated symbols of our Covid times to reflect their own experiences.

Paper Sculpture
Cotton based paper, wire
Students were challenged to construct a three dimensional sculpture of a head or figure, using only heavyweight watercolour paper, wire and glue. Sculptures were self standing and students applied a range of painted finishes. The focus of this project was exploring the properties of materials, trialing various construction techniques and photographing the finished sculpture in a considered composition.
Drypoint Printmaking
Steel plate, paper, ink
Students extended their drawing experience by using a drypoint needle to draw onto steel plate. With a focus on process; transferring imagery from plate to paper, students’ drawings were based on their holiday experiences. Students explored using ‘a la poupee’ inking techniques, ‘chine collee’ and hand colouring to finish their prints.
