Agnes Jones’s unit 4 artwork, My Life in Northcote, demonstrates the use of colour and line to create a realistic artwork inspired by her hometown of Northcote which examines the theme of connection. Jones has previously primarily worked with oil paint, aiming to developing her skill and visual language in creating street-based works surrounding the continuous theme of connection. Her unit 3 artworks have demonstrated a connection to family through place, shown through subject matter of her brother and of a street in Norway, whereas, My Life in Northcote explores the idea of connection to oneself, shown through the setting of Northcote in the artwork. Jones’s use of bright colour presents a positive atmosphere in order to convey to the audience her confident connection to self as well as an attempt to create a happy and calm feeling. Jones has also made use of strong directional lines through the power lines and road encouraging the audience’s view to be lead around the painting before ending up at the focal point. Jones grew up and still currently lives in Northcote making it an integral part of her everyday life. Through My Life in Northcote Jones examines the environment where most of her memories are set and the environment where her personality and beliefs have developed to form the factors to make up who she is.
