Unit 4 Art Making and Exhibiting
‘Open your Eyes’ explores central themes of powerlessness, faith, and a lack of control. Scala’s acrylic on canvas work serves as a warning and reminder to his audience of the inhumane amounts of powers some have over humans. Ishaan’s inhumane characteristics displayed by extra unnecessary features creates a subtle but certain divide between humans and the amount of power they have compared to the inhumane and unnatural amount of power some others have, making them above us all. The artwork incorporates religious emblems such as the ‘eyes of Saint Lucia’, a relic supposedly seen as a symbol of light and guidance. Ishaan’s comparison of religion and political power creates a divide in faith, posing the question to his viewers of who is to really be trusted. ‘Open your eyes’ establishes his controversial stance that governments and people with power are attempting to pull the wool over other’s eyes, creating an inhumane and dishonest world.
