Unit 4 Art Making and Exhibiting
Charlotte’s ‘Unfinished Dinner’ portrays an unidentified individual’s lonely meal. Through varying textures and mediums including ceramics, resin, plastic foliage, olive tree leaves and secondhand silverware creates an appetising three course meal drawing the audience’s eye from one side of the table to the other beginning at the dinner plate then leading to the final dessert.
The decaying, dying range of food and plants symbolises the passing of time. The Unit 4 artwork directly explores the idea of observation and how external observers can watch as objects change but have no intention to act and prevent their demise. The singular eating plate suggests the isolation of the unidentified individual who left this meal to rot and entices the viewer to look deeper within the artwork in search of information.
The rotting picture frame included with a pencil drawn image inspired by early 1600’s oil paintings, aims to bring a personal connection between the viewer and the mysterious individual, though this drawing has no definitive location it forces the viewer to ask questions to which have no affirmative answers.
This artwork draws inspiration from the mural painting “The Last Supper” by the Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci, which depicts a meal with Jesus and the Twelve Apostles, representing the power of community and social connection through food whereas Charlotte’s artwork highlights the damaging nature of isolation. Charlotte was able to draw inspiration and refine her techniques through her unit 3 artworks, displaying a smaller and more modern version of a similar arrangement.
