art making & exhibiting 2023

Owen’s choice of the artform of photography stemmed from her inner passion for it, as she believes that capturing a moment or a memory is an important part of life. The artist also has a passion towards the experimentation that can be implemented into the art of photography, such as with subject matter, angles, and lighting. Owen’s artmaking process consisted of many photo trials when she was holidaying in France. Stating she ‘took a photo whenever she saw an opportunity’. Throughout her journey, Owen saw many different settings and she wanted to experiment with her photos as much as possible. This then created her photo series. The message that Owen wants to pursue from artwork, she states, ‘may not seem super clear at first’, but she allows that to add to the mysterious element that could be associated with it. Overall, the artist wanted to show portrayal of emotion and how it is something so imperfect, but people may not realise. In other terms, what you feel inside may not match what you feel on the outside, or match your outer environment, and in the same way what you feel inside might manifest into your outer reality. This can be seen through how some photographs match the settings of the girl and what she may be thinking while others don’t, and why she has  matched every picture with a person to a picture without in the subject matter, to create mini stories within it. This artwork related to her unit 3 photography artwork which explored the themes of portrayal of emotion, using the same figure and camera as unit 4. The painting she did in unit 3 was an oil painting on canvas, portraying a girls bedroom with a girl on her bed. Exploring the themes of stereotypical femininity and how it can be seen as a negative thing rather than a form of expression.
