Stephens practice incorporates richly textured and layered works on canvas with an intuitive approach to colour and composition. Her eroded coast edition encompasses four separate canvas which are consciously and meticulously arranged to simultaneously embody the intact textures and patterns created on the exterior of coastal rocks as well as the distinct contrast in shapes, depth, protrusion of texture, and neutral colour as a result of the natural process in which earthen materials are worn away. Broadly Stephens explores humankinds’ connection to the natural world, narrowing in by obscuring surface depictions, allowing the audience to nuance eroded coastal environments to their own perception and needs. Each canvas uses a unique blend of materials from both the construction and art industry to create highly textured, minimalistic pieces. Stephens sought to abstract coastal erosion by focusing on 3D elements and depth as opposed to traditional art on canvas which has a focus on colours and images, as well as incorporating sand and shell imprints to enhance the aesthetic, evoking a relaxed-pace and atmosphere of peace and calm.
Stephens Unit 3 artwork’s capture the idea of the natural world through abstraction of textured subject matter. The mixed media compositions create a unique depiction of natures elements in promulgating lines and shapes that allow viewers to appreciate the depth of 3D art.
