ale cocchis
Cocchis’s artworks in Unit 3 revolves centrally around the profound theme of contrast, with a primary focus on the dichotomy between life and death.
The sculpture is influenced by the delicacy of nature, most notably exemplified by the paper flowers incorporated into the heart. This serves as a poignant contrast to the stark and unflinching portrayal of decay and the unadorned reality of death that the sculpture seeks to confront and portray through the constraining ribcage.
Cocchis anchors the watercolour painting to the profound exploration of the disconnection that has tragically burgeoned between humanity and the natural world. This disconnection is a commentary on the detachment of contemporary society from its roots in the natural world.
For Unit 4, Cocchis’s collection of 3 artworks convey a distinct yet interconnected significance. She uses the fork and the straw symbolize the act of human consumption.
Whereas the paper clips embody the human tendency to unify elements that inherently resist confinement. Just as paper clips secure items together, nature, represented by the flourishing mould, evolves organically and unrestrainedly around these constraints. The lightweight and organic components she employs unite to contrast the solid and lifeless chrome objects, which deliberately reflect the universal association with an industrial and artificial aesthetic. These inert objects encapsulate the concept of human invention, embodying a perpetual state that counterpoints the flux of growth and decay innate to nature.
Cocchis ultimately uses ‘Growth and Decay’ to serve as visual metaphors, articulating the dichotomy between natural and artificial creation, as well as the trajectories of their development.
